Harry Potter Party Ideas: How to Create a Magical Hogwarts Birthday
There are Harry Potter parties… and then there are parties where your guests really feel as though they've stepped into the wizarding world.
The good news is that you don't need to transform the whole house into Hogwarts to make it magical. A brilliant entrance, a few show-stopping Harry Potter party decorations, a Great Hall-inspired table and some cleverly chosen activities can do most of the work.
Whether you're planning a Harry Potter birthday for a newly obsessed eight-year-old, a teen who's grown up with the books or a lifelong Potter fan, we've gathered our favourite ideas for creating a celebration worthy of Hogwarts.
IT ALL STARTS WITH A LETTER FROM HOGWARTS
What is more magical than receiving a letter from Hogwarts through your letterbox?

Send each guest their own Hogwarts acceptance letter. Cream paper, an envelope and a Hogwarts-style crest are enough to make a wonderfully convincing invitation. Add instructions to arrive at Platform 9¾ at a certain time and you've already started the story before anyone reaches the party. You could even ask guests to arrive dressed as witches and wizards – or simply in the colours of their favourite Hogwarts house.
DIY PLATFORM 9¾ ENTRANCE
Turn a simple brick-wall photography backdrop into your own Platform 9¾ entrance.

- Choose a brick photography backdrop with a pole pocket along the top. We like this one from dbackdrop.co.uk
- Cut to size and the carefully cut vertically up the centre, stopping below the pole pocket so the top remains intact.
- Thread a retractable curtain pole through the pocket.
- Position the pole securely across a doorway.
- Add a Platform 9¾ sign or removable sticker above the opening.
- Part the two sides slightly so guests can walk straight through the 'wall' and into the party.
Party tip: Put your Hogwarts decorations on the other side so guests get their first glimpse of the party as they step through Platform 9¾.
HARRY POTTER PARTY DECORATIONS - MAKE ONE BIG STATEMENT!
You don't need Harry Potter decorations covering every surface. In fact, we'd rather choose one area and make it fantastic.

Create a focal point behind the cake or party table with a Hogwarts-inspired balloon garland, then add a few unmistakably wizarding details – a Golden Snitch, broomstick or Hogwarts banner.
Jewel colours, gold, black and warm neutrals give you the classic Hogwarts feel without making everything look overly themed.

HOLD A SORTING CEREMONY
Once everyone has arrived at Hogwarts, it's time to discover their house.
Give each guest their own Sorting Hat party hat, then make a little ceremony of deciding whether they belong in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
Our Sorting Hat set includes six hats, each with a set of four Hogwarts house stickers, so once everyone has been sorted they can choose the matching house sticker and add it to their hat. Keep the hats on for the rest of the party so everyone knows which house they're representing.
Then let the competition begin. Award house points for party games, your Hogwarts lessons, quizzes, finding the Golden Snitch – or particularly impressive magic – and reveal the winning house at the end of the party.
For a smaller group, don't worry about using all four houses. Two competing houses will make the games much easier.

WELCOME TO THE GREAT HALL
This is where the party table can really come into its own.
Start with a simple tablecloth and layer in candles, old books, gold stars or a few potion bottles. Then add Harry Potter plates and cups rather than covering every inch of the table in themed decorations.
Our favourite detail is a London to Hogwarts ticket napkin at each place setting. They look like little train tickets, so you could even use them as part of each guest's journey to Hogwarts.
For extra Great Hall magic, hang battery-operated floating candles overhead. Keep everything flameless around children, balloons and paper decorations.
SERVE HAGRID'S BIRTHDAY CAKE
This might be the most forgiving birthday cake you'll ever make.

Hagrid's Cake Recipe - Harry Potter Birthday Cake - Aimee Mars
Recreate the wonderfully wonky pink cake Hagrid gives Harry, complete with bright green writing. The charm is that it absolutely shouldn't look professionally iced.
Pink buttercream, green icing and a slightly imperfect finish are exactly what you want.
The official Harry Potter birthday guide suggests the same idea – and points out that rough edges only make it more authentic.
Not a baker? Buy a plain sponge cake, cover it rather enthusiastically in pink buttercream and pipe on the green lettering. Wonky is positively encouraged.
TURN PARTY GAMES INTO HOGWARTS LESSONS
Rather than stopping everything for a string of unrelated party games, send your new Hogwarts pupils to class.
A handful of short activities can make the whole party feel much more immersive.
Potions Class
Set out clear cups or little bottles with colourful juices and a selection of edible additions – think popping candy, sprinkles or edible shimmer – and let each child create their own potion.
Give the ingredients magical names and write a simple potion recipe on a chalkboard or card.
The important bit: make it something they can drink safely – even if they make a face!
For younger children, keep ingredients familiar and check allergies carefully.
Charms Class – learn some real magic
Rather than just shouting Wingardium Leviosa, teach your Hogwarts pupils an actual magic trick.
A simple disappearing coin, prediction trick or beginner levitation illusion can become their first Charms lesson.
We love this idea because children leave the party having learnt something they can perform again at home.

Divination
Here's an easy one: fill a bowl or bag with folded predictions and let everyone discover their wizarding future.
You will discover an unexpected talent.
An owl will bring good news.
Beware of anyone offering you a suspiciously large spider.
Or let the children invent predictions for one another.
SOMEONE HAS STOLEN THE GOLDEN SNITCH...
Halfway through the party, announce that the Golden Snitch has disappeared.
Hide a Golden Snitch somewhere in the house or garden and send the Hogwarts houses searching for it. Our Golden Snitch Balloon works brilliantly for this – hide it somewhere unexpected, then award house points to the team that spots it first.
For older children, make it a little harder by giving them a short trail of clues leading to the Snitch rather than simply setting them loose to search. It helps turn the party into one continuous Hogwarts adventure rather than a series of separate organised games.
For younger children, you could hide several little golden Snitches so everyone has a chance to find one.
If you'd prefer something smaller to hide, the official Harry Potter Shop also has a Golden Snitch toy, which would make a rather special prize for the winner. Golden Snitch Toy at the Harry Potter Shop
TAKE A TRIP TO HONEYDUKES
You don't need an enormous professionally styled sweet table to create your own little corner of Honeydukes.
Fill glass jars and colourful bowls with jelly beans, gummy sweets, marshmallows, chocolate, mints, lollipops and other favourites, then give ordinary Muggle sweets a magical makeover with handwritten labels.
Need some authentic Honeydukes names? Try:
Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans · Chocolate Frogs · Fizzing Whizzbees · Acid Pops · Cockroach Clusters · Fudge Flies · Ice Mice · Jelly Slugs · Liquorice Wands · Pepper Imps · Peppermint Toads · Sugar Quills · Toothflossing Stringmints · Drooble's Best Blowing Gum · Blood-Flavoured Lollipops · Chocolate Cauldrons
Make your own Golden Snitches:
Here's one of our favourite easy additions: turn Ferrero Rocher chocolates into Golden Snitches by adding a pair of little paper wings.

They're instantly recognisable, take minutes to make and look brilliant scattered amongst the sweets or placed at each setting.
Turn Honeydukes into the party bags
Rather than preparing separate party bags, let guests visit Honeydukes before they leave and choose a few sweets to take home.
Set out our Honeydukes Party Bags, add a scoop or pair of sweet tongs and let each young witch or wizard fill their own.

It's a party activity, sweet table and take-home treat all in one – and considerably more exciting than handing everyone a ready-filled bag at the door.
Want the real thing?
Mixing homemade ideas with a few genuine wizarding treats will make the display even more convincing. The official Harry Potter Shop sells sweets including Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and other licensed treats.

WHAT FOOD SHOULD YOU SERVE AT A HARRY POTTER PARTY?
Keep this easier than Pinterest would have you believe.
Alongside normal party food, choose just a few things with a wizarding twist:
- Golden Snitch’s (Ferrero Rocher with wings)
- pumpkin pasties
- popcorn in house colours or bags of crisps in house colours
- pumpkin juice (carrot & Orange juice combined)
- Butterbeer-inspired drinks
- Hagrid's birthday cake
Add little handwritten food labels and suddenly a perfectly normal buffet starts to feel like a Hogwarts feast.
Want to go further?
Rather than attempting an entire Great Hall banquet from scratch, have a look at The Official Harry Potter Cookbook, which includes more than 40 wizarding-world-inspired recipes for snacks, meals, desserts and drinks.
SEND THEM HOME WITH SOMETHING MAGICAL
A wand, chocolate coins, a few Honeydukes sweets, temporary tattoos or a little spell book make memorable Hogwarts souvenirs.
Even better, let some of the activities become the favours: the wand they used in Charms, their potion bottle, sweets collected from Honeydukes and their Hogwarts acceptance letter can all go home with them.
Want to take your Harry Potter party even further?
If the basic Hogwarts party isn't quite enough, here are a few ideas for the seriously committed.
Create a Marauder's Map Treasure Hunt
Send your young witches and wizards off on a secret mission with their own Marauder's Map-inspired treasure hunt.
Start by handing them an old-looking map or first clue marked “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good”, then hide a trail of clues around the house or garden. Each one can lead to a different Hogwarts location – the Great Hall, Potions classroom, Forbidden Forest, Room of Requirement or even Honeydukes.
You could add little footprints to the clues, use invisible ink, or make older children solve riddles and spells to discover where to go next.
For the final treasure, hide a box of Chocolate Frogs, Golden Snitches or party favours with one last message inside: Mischief Managed.
For younger children, keep it simple with pictures and footprints to follow. For older children, make the clues harder and turn it into a proper Hogwarts mystery.
Have a birthday at The Burrow
Not every Harry Potter party needs to be burgundy, black and gold.
For something warmer and much less expected, take inspiration from the Weasley family home.
Think mismatched plates, colourful napkins, homemade bunting, paper streamers, candles, jars of garden flowers and plenty of food piled down the middle of the table.
Nothing needs to match too perfectly. In fact, that's rather the point.
It would make a gorgeous Harry Potter theme for an older child, teen or grown-up fan – and it's particularly lovely for an autumn or winter birthday.
Hold your own Triwizard Tournament
Divide everyone into Hogwarts houses and set three challenges.
They don't need to involve dragons.
Try a wizarding obstacle course, a clue hunt for a Golden Egg and a final race to find the Triwizard Cup.
Keep the challenges short and award house points along the way.
Build Ollivanders
For a craftier party, let every guest choose – or make – their own wand.
Better still, wrap the finished wands individually and let the children choose one without knowing what's inside. Add a little card describing its wood, magical core and personality.
After all, the wand chooses the wizard.
Host a Hogwarts movie night
For older children, teenagers or adult Potter fans, forget organised games entirely.
Create a Great Hall-inspired table, pile up cushions and blankets, serve wizarding snacks and Butterbeer-style drinks and settle in for a Harry Potter film marathon.
It gives you all the fun of decorating Hogwarts without having to entertain twelve excitable first-years.
A little magic goes a long way
The best Harry Potter parties aren't necessarily the ones with the most decorations.
Choose a few moments that guests will remember: walking through Platform 9¾, being sorted into a Hogwarts house, sitting down at the Great Hall table, learning a magic trick and hunting for the missing Golden Snitch.
Then use your decorations to bring those moments to life.
